Nairobi City
Location: Nairobi, South Central Kenya
Area: 117 km²
Overview
Nairobi City County is one of the 47 counties of Kenya. The third smallest yet the most populous of the counties, it also serves as the capital city of the Republic of Kenya. With the last census in 2019 – a 4.397 million population was counted. The name “Nairobi” originates from the Maasai phrase “Enkare Nyrobi” which translates to “cool water”.
The Nairobi area currently occupies what was essentially an uninhabited swamp until a supply depot of the Uganda Railways, built by the British in 1899 linked Mombasa to Uganda, a location chosen due to its central position between Mombasa and Kampala.
Chosen due to its network of rivers that could the camp with water and its elevation would make it cool enough for residential purposes not only for the thousands of Indian labourers who came to Kenya seeking employment to work on the railway line, as well as the British settlers. Such an apt location led its growth to be the railway’s headquarters.
