Location: Arusha Region, Northern Tanzania

Conservation Name:  The Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Area: 8,292 km2

Conservation Introduction: The Ngorongoro Conservation Area covers the Ngorongoro Crater which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest caldera on the earth. The wider Conservation Area also includes Olduvai Gorge, Mountains, Forests, and remote highlands to the North.  This conservation area was once a part of the greater Serengeti National Park till 1959 when it became a separate reserve.

The Ngorongoro Crater was created as a giant volcano size of Mount Kilimanjaro erupted against its own weight 3 million years ago. Some scientists believe it was about 19,000 feet high, while others believe it is higher than Kilimanjaro. The crater is now 20 kilometers wide and 2,000 feet deep, with an enclosed nature, forming its own eco-system consisting of swamps, acacia forests, savanna grasslands, small streams, and lakes.

The Conservation Area is considered the 8th wonder of the world. The features form an amazing wildlife haven as such the crater is often referred to as the “Garden of Eden”, providing everything the animals need to survive throughout the year.  Inside the crater lives the largest stable population of wild animals in Africa. Spotting the Big Five is real and a most comprehensive safari experience.

Most of the wildlife do not migrate, except a few wildebeest and Zebra due to the natural enclosure and reliable waterholes, enduring safaris remain of high quality all year round. This is one of the few wildlife reserves in Tanzania that allows human habitation, and the Maasai herdsmen are allowed to graze at the rim of the crater or inside during the drought period.

The Uniqueness of this Park:

  • Home to the highest concentration of wildlife in Africa which includes threatened species.
  • World’s largest inactive caldera.
  • Multi land use status, unique amongst East Africa’s protected areas.
