City Introduction: the United Republic of Tanzania was a sovereign state in 1964 through the union of the separate states of Tanganyika and Zanzibar. The mainland Tanganyika covers more than 99 percent of the combined territories’ total area. Located in East Africa south of the Equator, home to the tallest mountain, in northeastern Tanzania – stands Mount Kilimanjaro at 5,895 m. 

The United Nations estimated the population to be 63.59 million, the most populous country located south of the Equator. Commonly known as Dar, is the largest city and financial hub of Tanzania. Dar is the largest city in East Africa and the seventh-largest in Africa, located on the Swahili Coast.

Mafia Island is administered from the mainland, while Zanzibar and Pemba islands have separate administrations. Dodoma, since 1974 the designated official capital of Tanzania, is centrally located on the mainland. Dar es Salaam is the largest city and port in the country and the town was founded by Majid bin Said, the first Sultan of Zanzibar in 1865 or 1866.

It was the main administrative and commercial center of German East Africa, Tanganyika, and Tanzania. 

The decision was made in 1974 to move the capital to Dodoma and was officially completed in 1996. Dar is the most prominent city for arts, fashion, media, film, television, and finance. The architecture is a mixture of African, Arab, Indian, and German though much of this is now towering high-rises.
