The park has acquired its name from the Tarangire River that crosses the park and is the primary source of fresh water for wild animals in the Tarangire Ecosystem during the dry season. This Ecosystem is defined by the long-distance migration of wildebeest and zebras, where during the dry season thousands of animals concentrate in the Park from the surrounding wet-season dispersal and calving areas.

The dry season months of June through November are the best times to visit the Tarangire National Park. Accessible by road from Arusha is 2 hr. 51 min (150.6 km/93.57miles), and by air from Arusha, to Tarangire National Park is 40mins nonstop.
