Overview

This conservancy is a non-profit wildlife conservancy in Central Kenya’s Laikipia County, situated on the equator west of Nanyuki, between the foothills of the Aberdares and Mount Kenya. Accessible by road from Nairobi via Embu 4hr 7min drive (211.4km/131miles).

Working to conserve wildlife, most famous for providing a sanctuary for the only two female northern white rhinos left in the world today (2022) as the last remaining male passed away in 2018 leaving the two females to be cared for at this conservancy, and the great apes, and generate income through wildlife tourism by complementary enterprises for re-investment in conservation and community development.

In an ecosystem, with the highest densities of wildlife in Kenya outside of the Maasai Mara. Using the latest technology to monitor species populations, and smart fencing techniques that allow free movement of migratory wildlife, Ol Pejeta prides itself on being at the cutting edge of conservation innovation.

This conservation of natural habitat ensures the protection of the existing largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa and the only place in Kenya to see captive chimpanzees living in a 300-acre sanctuary, host of the “Big Five game” animals among a large selection of other African animals making it a popular destination.

Operating a successful livestock program, which serves to benefit local pastoralists and wildlife, through the community development programme, Ol Pejeta provides funding to surrounding communities to aid health, education, water, and infrastructure projects. They also support the provision of agriculture and livestock extension services.

The Uniqueness of this Park
