Overview

In the distant shadow of Mount Kenya, lies the 46,000-acre Mugie Wildlife conservancy, at the north-western edge of the Laikipia, on a 6,000-foot elevation providing guests with vast scenery and temperate climate to enjoy all that the Kenyan wilderness offers.

Approximately 70 mammals roam 22,000acres set aside for its wildlife sanctuary, these include Elands, Buffalos, Elephants, Hyenas, Cheetahs, Lions, and other plains animals. Successful conservation efforts make Mugie Conservancy admirable to see Jackson’s Hartebeests and Grevy’s Zebras.

The sanctuary’s design has a dam that works to maintain a 156-acre lake that attracts many species, especially during droughts, and 280 migratory and resident bird species. Most recently added to the lake are Tilapia and Bass further advancing sustainable tourism practices.

Recognized for hosting the core study area of the Laikipia Predator Project striving to protect Africa’s largest and most majestic predatory hunters. Mugie has proven that predators, humans, and livestock can co-exist with proper management. Interested guests at Mugie, can join researchers in their efforts to track lions, the primary animal under study at the conservancy.

Mugie, Ekorian, and The Moyo Foundation collaborate on several projects, combining sustainable conservation, productive rangeland management, community cooperation, responsible tourism, and more.  The Moyo Foundation and Ekorian are piloting a project in sourcing sustainable honey and connecting with markets. Bee-keeping at Mugie has 20 bee hives used as a barrier to elephants from Mugie’s crops.
