Kwihala Camp dinner set up under the stars on the river bed

Location: Karatu, Arusha, Tanzania

Overview

Kwihala sits deep in the bush of Ruaha National Park, the largest national park in Tanzania, host to the largest population of elephants, 10%of the world’s lion population, and a Lion Conservation Unit since 2005. Leopards hunt the thicker woodland areas, cheetahs scan the plains for prey, and here the wild dogs are endangered with almost 100 left. The park is a remote and peaceful place with fewer visitors than most parks.

Kwihala Camp is set deep in the forest, surrounded by rain, fig, sausage, and Jackalberry trees. With proximity to the Mwagusi River makes this Camp the best location in Ruaha National Park for game viewing as a lot of animals drink water at this river. The National Park forms a transitional point between the landscapes of East and Southern Africa, with golden plains of sun-bleached grass, ancient baobabs, and palm forests.

Six expedition-style spacious tents offer an intimate exclusive safari experience in this vast land of towering baobabs and dense forests, with king-sized beds, a fan and mosquito net, en-suite bathrooms, double vanity basins, flushing toilets, and hot water safari buckets showers.

The shady veranda is your vantage point to watch elephants or kudus wandering past the camp. Whether on foot, discovering the smaller inhabitants of the bush and learning to identify animal prints and dung, or on a game viewing drive day or night you might spot greater and lesser kudu, sable and roan antelope, elephants, giraffes, bat-eared foxes and any of the area’s 570 bird species designed in homage to the old expedition camps

At night, venture out with a spotlight to find nocturnal animals like bush babies and hyenas, and finish off the day around the campfire with a glass of wine under the glittering Milky Way. You may hear the nearby Ikuka waterfall in the still night air. The closest airstrip Msembe is a 45-minute drive from the Camp. Children aged five and older are welcome as guests, and the Park is open all year round, but the camp is closed between December and June.

Cheetahs — and even the occasional wild dog or leopard — are seen hunting on these plain, too. You might also. The tented lounge and dining room are the social heart of the camp, where you’ll enjoy meals with fellow guests and chill out in the afternoon.
