Elsa’s Kopje is sculpted into Mughwango Hill, above the site of George Adamson’s original camp where he raised and released orphan lions, long before conservation became fashionable.

Elsa’s Kopje, boasts of 870km² (215,000 acres) of authentic African landscape, the Meru National Park offers a thriving rhino sanctuary, famous for large elephant herds, hippo, lion, and birdlife; recognized as having more diversity of animal species than any other park in East Africa.

The Camp is an environmental award-winning, boutique lodge, Winner of the Good Safari Guide’s ‘Best Safari Property in Africa’ award, Elsa’s Kopje is widely renowned as one of the most elegant lodges in Africa with an Eco-Tourism Kenya Eco-Gold rated. Designed and built by Stefano Cheli, officially opened by Dr. Richard Leakey (Director of Kenya Wildlife Service at the time), and Virginia McKenna of Born Free fame in 1999.

Each cottage is crafted around the rocks, with a large bedroom, open sitting room, veranda and spacious bathroom, each with breathtaking views.  Children of all ages welcome and open all year round.

Uniqueness of this Camp

A home on Mughwango Hill, Elsa’s Kopje blends into the rocky crags of the “kopje” (small hill), above the site of George Adamson’s campsite.

Every cottage is the ultimate ‘Room-with-a-view’, uniquely designed and crafted, incorporating the natural features of the rocky hillside.

Dotted with doum palms and traversed by weaving green lines of the 13 life-giving rivers, Meru National Park offers wonderful game watching opportunities, and is one of the best locations to view rhino in their natural habitat.

Accommodation

6 Unique open-fronted cottage suites each designed in an elegant safari style with, 5 doubles and 1 twin/double, main bedroom, ensuite bathroom and shower, private deck/verandah: Cottage 3 has a private sitting room not a deck, 2 rooms can fit one extra bed, to accommodate children under the age of 16yrs. Balcony / Deck, Dressing Gowns, Electrical Outlets, Mosquito Nets, Pure Cotton Linen.

The Family Cottage: spacious 2-bedroom cottage with a double and a twin room, both en-suite, a beautiful living room, large private deck and an outside bath by the master bedroom.

Honeymoon Suite: with three Honeymoon Suites.  Two of the suites have romantic outside baths, one suite has three levels featuring a private sitting room, main bedroom with en-suite bathroom, and a small private deck.

Elsa’s Private House: Has one en-suite master bedroom with dressing room, one en-suite twin bedroom, a large dining and sitting room, a private garden and infinity swimming pool and can fit two extra beds, for children under 16yrs.

Activities

Mughwango Airstrip (private airstrip) is a 5 min drive from the lodge, all the guides are Bronze or Silver level Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association certified. Elsa’s Kopje uses open game viewing drive vehicles, current fleet are new, specially fitted, 4×4 Toyota Land cruisers. Photographic safaris have been unrivalled with feature enhancements specifically designed for comfort and photography – open sided with 3 rows of seats, photographic equipment stands, and charging sockets. 

Game drives are shared unless “exclusive use of vehicle” has been pre-booked at an extra charge, day excursions to the Tana River with picnic lunch, visit of the Rhino Sanctuary, Guided walk up to the very top of Mughwango Hill, River Fishing of catfish, tilapia and barbell, infinity pool with pool bar service, Private House has own swimming pool, Bush breakfasts, sundowners, massages, visit of Tharaka community, weddings, blessings, and renewal of vows for guests’.
